Review of preparation of alkoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane

Abstract

Hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane is the base polymer for room vulcanized silicone rubber with release of alcohols during crosslinking process.When hydroxyl group is substituted by alkoxy group,the alkoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane exhibits lower reaction rate with the catalyst and thus can benefit to avoid the sudden viscosity increase inevitably occurred when using hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane as the base polymer for silicone rubber.The introduction of alkoxyl group also can increase the bonding strength of the silicone rubber to the substrate.The latest advances in various preparation methods such as condensation reactions,hydrosilylation reactions,and alkoxysilylation reactions and performance testing of alkoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes were reviewed,together with the methods for judging the degree of alkoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane obtained by different preparation methods,their uses and their effects on the properties of silicone rubber.On this basis,the development of active and inert group terminated polysiloxanes using the condensation reaction between silanols and alkoxysilanes was proposed.The development prospect of alkoxy-terminated polysiloxanes was also prospected.
