Abstract

The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)have attracted considerable interest due to their special properties such as large surface area, high porosity and adjustable micro-pore size.Unfortunately, some of the materials' industrial applications are limited because of their instability with respect to moisture and sharp decrease of adsorption ability when face to moisture conditions. The hydrophobic modification offers an opportunity to address this challenge. The recent research progress on hydrophobic modification of MOFs was reviewed, with the focused on the modification methods such as use strong coordination bonds, hydrophobic organic group modification, surface hydrophobic coating and other methods. The effects of the modification on the materials structure were detailed description and the relative merits of these methods were probed. In addition,a promising method for improving the research efficiency was to comprehensive consideration of the structure characters of the materials, the intended use of the materials and the advantages and shortcomings of the modification methods. Finally, the hydrophobic modification methods of MOFs and the practical application of MOFs were prospected.
