Study on initiating property of two HMX-based booster explosive

Abstract

In order to investigate the pacticle size's influence on initiation of the booster explosives,the shock wave initiation expertiment were did on the two booster explosives with different HMX particles,and the manganin pressure resistance sensor were used to test the pressure variance of the initiation.Results showed that:under the same density and solid content,the PBX-5C's shock wave critical initiation pressure was 8.24GPa,which was lower than that of the PBX-4C whose shock wave critical initiation pressure was 9.87GPa.When the incoming pressure was 9.91GPa,the detonation-induced distance of PBX-4C was 13.5~18.5mm,while that of the PBX-5C was 6~10mm.It was found that with the increasing of incoming pressure,the detonation-induced distance decreased.Under their respective critical initiation pressure,the ignition distance of PBX-4C was less than that of PBX-5C.In conclusion,with the same incoming pressure,booster explosive with the fine HMX particle had shorter detonation time and less detonation distance compared to booster explosive with coarse particle.
