Preparation and property of star-shaped waterborne polyurethane film with high tensile strength

Abstract

Star-shaped waterborne polyurethane (SWPU) was synthesized by prepolymer method from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI),polytetrahydrofuran (PTMG),poly-propylene glycerol (PPG-3),1,4-butanediol (BDO) and 2,2-dihydroxymethyl propionic acid (DMPA).The structure of SWPU was characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectra.SWPU showed higher number-average molecular weight and weight-average molecular weight.With the increase in PPG-3 content,the water resistance and mechanical properties of WPU film were improved.When PPG-3 content was 3% (mole fraction),the number-average molecular weight of SWPU was 4440g/mol,the emulsion was stable and the obtained film showed the highest tensile strength (52.7MPa) and elongation at break (444%).Its water contact was 64.1° and water absorption rate was 10.3%.Moreover,the introduction of PPG-3 helped to improve the thermal stability and glass-transition temperature.
