Abstract: Sodium-doped zinc oxide photocatalysts with visible-light activity were synthesized by a precipitation method and subsequent calcination process using zinc acetate dihydrate as the source of zinc, and sodium hydroxide as the precipitant and the source of sodium. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. The results indicated that the sodium-doped zinc oxide with a band gap of 3.1eV had visible light activity, and that the product synthesized with polyethylene glycol additive and subsequently calcined at 550℃ showed a higher photocatalytic activity and the degradation rate of 96% for methylene blue with 70min.
