Abstract: Biomaterials, especially shell materials, have attracted much attention because of their low density and layered composite structures.Microhardness and fracture toughness of abalone shell and clam shell were tested and compared with superhard ceramic materials. The results showed that the average surface hardness of abalone shell and clam shell were 295HV and 384HV,respectively.The highest hardness of the section were 427.4HV and 397.4HV.The specific hardness were 164.4 and 146.1.Although the hardness and specific hardness were lower than that of ceramics, the specific hardness was not much different from alumina ceramics, and was of the same order of magnitude. The fracture toughness of abalone shell and clam shell were 21.1MPa·m1/2 and 17.3MPa·m1/2,respectively,they were higher than alumina ceramics, boron nitride ceramics and boron carbide ceramics.Although the thickness of abalone shell and clam shell was very thin,it had excellent protective performance. They could provide a reference for the preparation of bionic anti-ballistic composite materials.
