Abstract: Nano silica particles (nano-SiO2 particles) with diameter of 12nm and 2μm used as the dispersed phase and PEG-200 used as the dispersion medium,shear thickening fluid (STF) with different system was prepared by mechanical stirring and ultrasonic shock.The morphology and agglomeration of nano-SiO2 particles were observed by JEM-2100(HR) type transmission electron microscopy,and the steady state and dynamic rheological properties of STF were tested by DHR rheometer.The results showed that the agglomeration of particles with diameter of 12nm was obvious,and that of 2μm was not obvious.The viscosity of STF exhibited firstly thinning and secondly thickening with the increase of shear velocity,which manifested as non-Newtonian fluid properties.The critical viscosity increased and critical shear velocity decreased of STF with increasing the concentration of particle.Shear thickening effect of particles with 12nm was better than that with 2μm.
